WINTER COATS

Or the art of looking stylishly warm under the coldest weathers

Original collage of different long black winter coats from the 50s to the 90s

With the first downfall of snow last weekend in the South of France, it now feels like we are truly living the magic of the winter season.

Winter, however, also means cold weather and sometimes extreme temperatures, but let's not let it threaten our style!

From the 40's princess lines, to 90's Minimalism Chic passing by 80's Power Dressing, fashion icons have, through those eras, always managed to use their winter coats as the "Cherry on the cake" to finish any outfit off with a glamorous and elegant attitude. Let's see how they do so and how we can do it in turn.

Long black coat modelled in snow

Whether you prefer it with a faux fur exterior/lining or simply in wool, you can’t go wrong with a mid to full length black coat! Indeed, wearing dark grey or black outerwear immediately makes your look sophisticated and subdued. And having it all the way to your ankles, only accentuates that effect even more!

The vintage coat above is a perfect example of it, long, black, with faux fur lining and trimming, it elongates the silhouette while being subtly cinched at the waist. You can't go wrong when comfort and warmth are allied with immaculate style! Just click on the photos and you'll be linked straight to it!

Cinematic photo of a brown outfit and coat

Tans and browns are another classic colour to wear during Autumn Winter. Earthy and casual, matching the falling leaves, they bring a certain nonchalant softness which exudes class, specially if you pair it well!

Now, how to style brown/tan coats for them to look elegant and classic without seeming boring. Let's take inspiration from the Sloane style, inherited from the 80s upper class British young women, renowned for their impeccable sense of fashion. As you can see in this collage I created, brown coats pair best with brown as an ensemble. Use different tones of brown such as taupe, beige, camel, tan or even a darker brown and play with contrasting textures (such as matelassé, faux fur or tweed) and/or subtle patterns (like tartan, animal print or geometric prints). A monochromatic look is a classic which never fails! Brown coats also pair beautifully with neutral tones such as black, whites, creams or greys.

Winter Trench Coat modelled with matching tan colours

In the two photos of me above, you’ll see an example of how I style a tan coat in winter with its matching tones of camel, tan and brown enhanced by the (again) matching accessories. This trench coat it perfect for the women who desire to wear a trench in winter without compromising on warmth, thanks to its faux fur lining and beautiful waterproof tan/copper coloured exterior fabric. It was made in France for the high end Parisian brand Claude Havrey and guarantees timeless chic! Above and below, you'll find two of the snuggest French made vintage sheepskin coats in brown and dark beige. One in real suede with unique geometrical leather pipings and the softest faux fur lining; for the other it's the exterior that is lovely and soft. Both with the option to have high collars, they'll keep you so cosy and warm!
