New you, New Style

Fashion as a Form of Expression
Today I’d like to take a different perspective on vintage cinema and fashion, focusing particularly on the different ways our favourite icons and vintage eras can inspire us in the constantly evolving path of our personal style.
To me, clothes are really a reflection of one’s inner self in different phases and aspects of our lives as well as the expression of how we identify and think of ourselves. Our choice of outfits can show our self confidence, our interest and tastes in music, film and fashion, and what message we’d like to consciously or unconsciously communicate about ourselves to the outside world.
It can be very easy to get stuck in a particular way of dressing because it just seems to define “who we are”, but it’s also possible to have fun with fashion, to try out different colours, shapes and styles, even if this would simply be to see how it makes us feel?
The Art of Trying out New Styles
Lyon, 08.11.23
It may be an interesting experience to try items that are considered “out of our comfort zone” while shopping or thrifting. It allows us to shift perspectives, step into a new version of ourselves, and as a result we may end up adopting a new look into our overall style over time.
One day we might feel like donning that self assured “boss girl” look, then the next day maybe we feel more like a “cuty girl” style, and then maybe another day going for that cool 90s “street style” look. That’s the beauty of experimenting and expressing a different version of ourselves through fashion on a regular basis!
I have created four mood boards of iconic styles through time which could be a great starting point to diversify and try out new fashion items and accessories for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.
“That suits you!”
A suit is such a statement item to have in our wardrobes and one that makes us feel and look chic, powerful and confident. We love the bold synergy of masculine/feminine energies which create such an iconic look.

Wear the classic pinstripe print for a cool “girl around town” work look, or with a white shirt, waistcoat and tie for the full suit experience.
And for spring/summer we can go for a more “casual chic” look by wearing a light cotton fabric suit in paler shades such as beige, cream or light blue.
“Fashion as a White Canvas”
To follow with a note on minimal elegance I’d like to focus on monochromatic outfits. These were more widespread in the past but wearing single colour outfits really adds class. I’ll focus particularly on the “all white” look which to me is the epitome of summer chic.

Wearing full whites may feel a little daunting at first because it is such a luminous tone and you may feel that it makes you stand out too much. But I promise, for the way it makes you feel, it is so worth it!
White is also the perfect colour for hot summer days as it reflects the sunlight, so this outfit is a win-win combination.
Whether you’d rather the relaxed summer vibes of 70s inspired crochet tops and low waisted trousers, cute 50s inspired jumpsuits, 60s A-line dresses or iconic 90s short skirts fitted at the waist worn with off the shoulder top and cool sunglasses; white can be adapted in as many ways as you’d like, and still always remains beautiful.
Pro tip: Monochromatic white pairs beautifully with textured straw hats, woven baskets and natural leather belts in various hues of beige and brown.
“Dressing for a Dolce Vita”
Ah, La Dolce Vita! To relax in the sun, read poetry, make the most delicious mediterranean meals, look pretty and enjoy life.

To complete the dolce vita look of a soft and easy going lifestyle one must of course be attired in the most beautiful dresses and skirts! For example long flowing skirt with a chain belt combined with traditional gypsy style off-the-shoulder tops, or dresses and tops with lovely floral, polka dot and gingham patterns and a head scarf to protect from the sun while looking pretty.
Wandering through the narrow streets of an Italian town followed by a refreshing dip in the sea. What a life! Even if this is merely a day dream, we can still infuse our lives with a touch of Italian summer vibes by dressing in “la dolce vita” style!
“70s Cool Chick”
Wild wind-swept hair, tanned skin, mini denim shorts, flowing colourful blouses, denim jackets: These images epitomise the relaxed carefree way of life of the 1970s. A lifestyle based on being chill, going with the flow and having fun.

We love how simple and effortless it is to put together a 1970s look and yet how iconic it makes us feel. Add a suede skirt or jeans and a leather jacket for a more 70s rock look, and you’re ready to ride off into the sunset on your motorbike.
As I’ve said before, finding one’s style(s) and what suits us best is all about experimenting and having fun. Looking back into vintage fashion and cinema gives us a fresh insight and inspiration which we can reappropriate and adapt to our modern lifestyles. Perhaps this newsletter will inspire you to enhance your personal vibe through your choice of outfits.
All the best,
Jamila Xx
