Romy Schneider

A few months ago, I stumbled upon Romy Schneider’s biography in a second hand book shop. Her natural charismatic beauty and presence on camera had always intrigued me so I was both surprised and pleased with my find.

Her eyes have a certain expression, something very intense yet soft at the same time, attesting to a true depth of character.

The author Rénate Seydel interestingly based his book on extracts from Romy’s diaries, letters and interviews which made it feel like her personal autobiography.

Reading her life story through the prism of her own intimate thoughts and feelings allowed me to discover a lady whose charisma and very essence seemed to emanate from a soul that is both profound and full of complexity, yet is in many ways seeking simplicity. She was a woman full of determination and passion who was ready to rebel and take risks in her life as well as in her choice of film roles, if it would help her evolve as an actress or fulfil her dreams. Romy was able to embody a wide range of roles and had a beautiful and natural talent for portraying feeling and emotion.

A heart of gold in a world she understood too well.
